ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2010) — A new approach to generating truly random numbers could lead to improved Internet security and better weather forecasts, according to researchers writing in the International Journal of Critical Computer-Based Systems. They allow websites and browsers to encrypt the data sent between them using a session key. Weather forecasters, climate scientists, economists, and epidemiologists also use random numbers to generate simulated data for their predictive models. Such simulations can test theories of hurricane formation, climate change, and the spread of disease epidemics, for instance. According to Bernhard Fechner of the University of Hagen, and Andre Osterloh of BTC AG, in Germany, the "quality" of a random number is a measure of how truly random the number is. This quality affects significantly any security or simulation in which it is used. If a so-called random number is not truly random, then someone could predict a security key and crack the Internet encryption on bank accounts, e-commerce sites or secure government websites, for instance.

Creating Electric Power From Light Using Gold Nanoparticles on Tuesday February 23, @11:16AM

"Professor of Materials Science Dawn Bonnell and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania have discovered a way to turn optical radiation into electrical current that could lead to self-powering molecular circuits and efficient data storage. They create surface plasmons that ride the surface of gold nanoparticles on a glass substrate. Surface plasmons were found to increase the efficiency of current production by a factor of four to 20, and with many independent parameters to optimize, enhancement factors could reach into the thousands. 'If the efficiency of the system could be scaled up without any additional, unforeseen limitations, we could conceivably manufacture a 1A, 1V sample the diameter of a human hair and an inch long,' Prof. Bonnell explained. The academic paper was published in the current issue of ACS Nano. (Abstract available for free.) The significance? This may allow the creation of nano-sized circuits that can power themselves through sunlight (or another directed light source). Hello, this is Jason Juett bringing you live commentary for game 2 of the Kasparov-Karpov match. Well, game 1 was a shock to me. Just when I was expecting a tense tactical fight, Karpov blundered and immediately resigned. Hopefully he will be able to pull himself together for game 2, for the tough challenge of Black against Kasparov. If he loses again it will be hard to maintain his motivation for the rest of the match. But let's not forget that Kasparov also won the first game of the rapid match that Karpov won a few years ago, so we can't count out the older player just yet.

It is a complete toss up to me whether Kasparov will open with 1.e4 or 1.d4. He's played both extremely well throughout his career. Whatever he chooses, I think it would be a good idea for him to try to get some line that has undergone a lot of changes in theory in recent years, because I have a feeling that despite being retired, he has kept up on things better than Karpov, who specialized in the later parts of the game rather than the opening even when in his prime, and who hasn't been working hard on chess preparation for quite some time. If 1.e4, I predict a Closed Ruy line, and if 1.d4 I predict a Queen's Indian line with g3, or a Catalan.

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Kasparov hopes to play the Exchange QGD and maintain a slight edge throughout the game.

3... Be7 This is a clever move order to avoid the line 3...Nf6 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bg5.

4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bf4 So now White has to develop the bishop this way.

5... c6 6.Qc2 Kasparov prevents the bishop from coming out to f5. It's also possible to play 6.e3 Bf5 7.g4!? and try to exploit the bishop being exposed, but Kasparov prefers to play simply this time.

6... Bd6 7.Bxd6 Qxd6 8.e3 Ne7 9.Bd3 Nd7 10.Nge2 White often hopes to play f3 and e4 in this variation, so that is a reason to place the knight on e2 instead of f3. Karpov retains a solid position for the moment, but I think White has a slight pull. The problem for Black in the Exhange QGD is that he has no reall good pawn breaks, while White can play for two good plans: either f3 and e4, or planing for a minority attack on the queenside with b4-b5.

10... h6 The novelty. Karpov wishes to castle without dropping h7. In earlier games this aim was achieved by playing the more obvious Nf6, but apparently Karpov wants that knight elsewhere.

11.O-O O-O Kasparov must be spending time now thinking about which plan he's going to go for. It is not easy coming up with a plan for Black. ..c5 is a break that probably does more harm than good, leaving d5 really weak. Black's idea break (accordint to the pawn structure), f5-f4, is usually very impractical to try to achieve.

12.a3 Looks like Kasparov is going for the minority attack. He'll follow up with b4 and b5 eventually, and then attacking Black's queenside.

12... a5 Stopping the expansion for a moment, but it cannot be permanently stopped, with supporting moves like Rab1 always available. Kasparov could also now switch back to the f3 plan if he wishes, a3 no longer being a waste of time in that case since it was answered by ...a5.

13.Rad1 This seems to signal a switch to the f3 and e4 plan, announcing that the rooks are probably going to go on d1 and e1, lending support to White's center.

13... b6 It would be nice to trade the light bishops off with ...Ba6, but the move is also slow.

14.e4 Kasparov vigorously answers and breaks open the center. 14.f3 also seemed logical, but I like Kasparov's choice.

14... de4 15.Ne4 Qb8 16.N2c3 The White position looks pretty attractive. The only potential weakness, the pawn on d4, is far from easily attackable. It also seemed possible to think about putting the knight on g3. Black's kingside lacks defenders and this may develop into a subject of great concern over the next several moves.

16... Ba6 Karpov trades off a potentially dangerous White piece, but on the other hand now Kasparov has 17.Bxa6 Rxa6 18.d5, liquidating the d4 pawn.

17.Ba6 Ra6 18.d5 Nd5 19.Nd5 cd5 20.Rd5 Ra7 Of course, the position is dead even as far as pawn structure goes, but White is much more active and Black will need to make some concessions. At the moment he has some difficulties with his attacked knight.

21.Qd2 This was to be expected, as 20...Rd8? would just invite a big pin on the d-file.

21... Nc5 This gives up a pawn, but more importantly walks into a mega-tactic with 22.Nf6+!!.

22.Nf6 Kasparov finds it! Now 22...Kh8 23.Rh5 is no good for Black, so he must capture.

22... gf6 23.Qh6 Now the threat is Rh5 with unstoppable mate. 23...f5 The only answer.

23... f5 24.Qg5 Most accurate. After 24.Rxf5?, Black would have 24...f6 keeping him in the game.

24... Kh8 25.Qf6+ Kg8 26.Rxf5 Ne4 The only answer to the threat of Rg5+.

27.Qh4 Another great move. Now the knight is hit and there's a threat of Qg4+ and Rh5#.

27... Re8 Of course Black could play like a computer and give back the knight, but then it's hopeless playing two pawns down with a bad position.

28.Rh5 Now the threat is Rh8+ Kg7 Qh6#.

28... f5 Freeing f7 for the king, but it is all over now. At the very least, White can check on h8, then check on h7 with the queen and play Rxe8, winning material due to the Ra7 also being attacked. Karpov resigns. Again a rather unfortunate game for him, but I'm very impressed by the way that Kasparov handled the game. A good opening, then achieving a freer position with the d5 break, topped off with a nice combination. Well, that's all for today. We know that the foods we eat affect the body but they can have even more influence on how well our brain functions. What we eat can have a POWERFUL affect on our brain’s energy, how the mind handles tasks, and our general mood.

Our focus here is on those particular nutrients found in foods that enhance neuron firing and cross-linking in the brain. The foods listed below can help you: concentrate, increase memory, tune sensorimotor skills, keep you motivated, speed up your reaction time, control stress, and even slow down the aging of brain cells!

So here is a list of 20 different food types that we can add to our diet, their effects, and how they function:

1. Whole Grain Foods

Whole grain is a great brain stimulator because it contains high percentage of folate. Make sure you’re eating a diet rich in whole grain breads, cereals, barley, popcorn, etc., because they can boost your blood flow to the brain. Every organ in the body is dependent on blood flow… especially the brain.

Wholegrain breads and cereals are rich in Vitamin B6, an important brain vitamin. Wheat germ additionally contains memory-improving thiamine.

Nuts

Everything from the most common nuts — such as walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews and almonds — to the more exotic seeds and nuts can clear up that “brain fog” and enable you to think clearer and are positive mood enhancers.

2. Walnuts

Both literally and figuratively speaking, walnuts are “brain food”. Physically the walnut looks a lot like the human brain. The thin, outer green cover that is taken out before the walnuts are sold is similar to the scalp. The hard shell of a walnut is like a skull. The thin sheet inside, with its paper-like partitions between the two halves of the walnut, is like the membrane. The shape of the walnut itself represents the human brain’s two hemispheres.

Walnuts are made up of 15 to 20 percent protein and contain linoleic (omega-6 fatty acids) and alpha-linoleic acids (omega-3 fatty acids), vitamin E and vitamin B6, making them an excellent source of nourishment for your nervous system.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in walnuts are especially helpful in brain function. Our brain is more than 60% structural fat which needs to be primarily omega-3 fats, found in walnuts and flaxseed, for its cell membranes to function properly. Cell membranes, primarily composed of fats, are the gatekeepers of the cell. Omega-3 fats, flexible and fluid by nature, make it easy for nutrients to pass thru the outer membrane of the cell and also helps remove waste efficiently. Definitely worth it when the cell belongs to your brain, don’t you think?

Walnuts may also help correct the human brain’s seratonin levels. Seratonin is an important brain chemical that controls both our moods and appetite. Walnuts may be able to relieve disorders like insomnia, depression, overeating and other compulsive behavior, commonly treated with antidepressant drugs like Prozac, without the dangerous side effects.

3. Cashews

While you’re in the nut aisle shopping for walnuts be sure to pick up some cashews, almonds, pecans and peanuts too. Each nut can enhance your mental health in its own way. Cashews are high in magnesium, known to open up the blood vessels in your body. More oxygen-rich blood = better brain function.

4. Almonds

Phenylalanine, found in almonds, can do wonders for your mental and neurological health. Phenylalanine has the rare ability to cross the blood-brain barrier where it stimulates the brain to generate natural mood-boosting neurotransmitters called dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline. Additionally, almonds are high in riboflavin which is known to boost memory.

5. Pecans

Pecans and peanuts provide choline, another important nutrient for optimal brain function. Choline aids in both memory and brain development.

Eating blueberries and a diet rich in deep pigment from fruits and vegetables helps preserve the brain machinery and boost the potency of neuron signals. Blueberries literally strengthen the brain. 12. Eggs

Eggs indeed offer a very impressive nutritional profile for their 70 calories. They are a precious source of high-quality proteins and rich in vitamins and minerals. But there’s more!

Nutrient called choline, found in eggs, can help boost the memory center in the brain. Researchers have found choline to increase the size of neurons, which helps them fire electrical signals more strongly and rebound faster between firings.

The History of the Lipizzaner Stallions

It is believed that the forerunner of the Lipizzan was bred in Carthage, more than 2,000 years ago. The Carthaginian stock was bred to the Vilano, a sturdy Pyrenees horse, and with Arab and Barbary strains. The result became the fabled Andalusian of ancient Spain.

During Spain's 700 years of Moorish domination, the breed remained essentially the same. Occasional crossing with fresh Arab and Oriental blood by the breeders of Cordoba and Granada assured that the fleetness and agility so prized by the Arabs remained qualities inherent in the stock. The Spanish began to export the horses after Spain rid itself of Moorish rule. The most notable stud farms were established in Italy and Frederiksborg, Denmark. The Danes produced excellent stock from the Spanish progenitors; the Italian "Neapolitan" bloodline became famous in Europe.

Archduke Maximilian, later Emperor of Austria, began breeding Spanish horses there about 1562. Eighteen years later, Archduke Karl, ruler of four Austrian provinces, established a royal stud farm in Lipizza, located in the hills of Karst, near Trieste.

Fresh Spanish stock was systematically added to the blood line at intervals to maintain the strength of the breed. Oriental stallions were used occasionally for the same purpose. In the 17th and 18th centuries, horses from the northern Italian stud farm at Polesnia and the highly regarded Neapolitan strain were brought to Lipizza to mingle with the resident stock and the descendants of the original Spanish line out of Denmark and Germany.

From 1809 to 1815 they lived in the lowlands of the TISZA River, which flows into the Danube. The land was hard on them. It took several years and an infusion of fresh blood to recapture the vitality and high standard of the line. In May of 1915, the Lipizzans were split up. Indications Metastatic Colorectal Cancer (mCRC) Avastin is indicated for the first- or second-line treatment of patients with metastatic carcinoma of the colon or rectum in combination with intravenous 5-fluorouracil–based chemotherapy. Non-Squamous Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Avastin is indicated for the first-line treatment of unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic non–squamous non–small cell lung cancer in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel. Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Avastin is indicated for the treatment of patients who have not received chemotherapy for metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer in combination with paclitaxel. The effectiveness of Avastin in MBC is based on an improvement in progression free survival. There are no data demonstrating an improvement in disease-related symptoms or increased survival with Avastin. Avastin is not indicated for patients with breast cancer that has progressed following anthracycline and taxane chemotherapy administered for metastatic disease. Important Safety Information Gastrointestinal (GI) perforation: Treatment with Avastin can result in the development of a potentially serious side effect called GI perforation, which is the development of a hole in the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine. In clinical trials, these events occurred throughout the course of treatment, and in some cases, resulted in fatality. Avastin therapy should be permanently stopped in people with GI perforation. Surgery and wound healing problems: Treatment with Avastin can lead to slow or incomplete wound healing (for example, when a surgical incision has trouble healing or staying closed). In some cases, this event resulted in fatality. Surgery and wound healing problems occurred more often in people who received Avastin. Avastin therapy should not be started for at least 28 days after surgery or until the surgical wound is fully healed. The length of time between stopping Avastin and having elective surgery without the risk of having wound healing problems has not been determined. Stop treatment with Avastin at least 28 days before elective surgery and in people with wound healing problems that require medical treatment. Severe bleeding: Treatment with Avastin can result in serious bleeding, including coughing up blood, gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding in the brain, nosebleeds, and vaginal bleeding. These events occurred up to five-fold more often in people who received Avastin, and in some cases resulted in fatality. Across cancer types, 1.2% to 4.6% of people who received Avastin experienced grade 3 or higher bleeding events. People who have recently coughed up blood (greater than or equal to a half teaspoon of red blood) or have serious bleeding should not receive Avastin. Permanently stop treatment with Avastin if serious bleeding occurs (ie, requiring medical attention). In clinical trials for different cancer types, additional serious side effects that occurred in more people who received Avastin than those in the comparison group were the formation of an abnormal passage from parts of the body to another part (non-GI fistula formation), stroke or heart problems, severe high blood pressure, nervous system and vision disturbances (reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome), too much protein in the urine and kidney problems, and infusion reactions. The most common grade 3-5 (not blood-related) and 4-5 (blood-related) events that occurred in more people who received Avastin than the comparison group were reduced white blood cell counts that may lead to infection, tiredness, high blood pressure, bleeding, weakness, abdominal pain, pain, blood clots, including those in the deep veins of the body or in the veins of the stomach, a brief loss of consciousness, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, blocking of the bowel, nervous system disturbances, headache, infection, too much protein in the urine, and stroke. Common side effects that occurred in more than 10% of people who received Avastin for different cancer types were nosebleeds, headache, high blood pressure, irritation of the nose, too much protein in the urine, taste change, dry skin, rectal bleeding, tear production disorder, and inflammation of the skin (exfoliative dermatitis). Sahara solar power plants plan

Making money from the sun is the aim of businesses that gathered in Germany on Monday to set up something called the Desertec Industrial Initiative.

A dozen companies, including Siemens, Munich Re, E.ON, ABB and Deutsche Bank, are hoping to build solar thermal power plants in the Sahara to supply Northern African, as well as Europe and the Middle East.

Talking about the region, Gerhard Knies, Chairman of the Desertec supervisory board, said: “All the countries involved have an energy problem and also climate change is going to hit them very hard. They are interested in a solution. So it is a win-win-situation for all the parties.”

Huge sums will be needed and it will take three years just to work out a detailed investment plan.

Critics have raised concerns about the costs and potential problems from political instability in the region where the solar thermal power plants would be built.

Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (CSP) plants are ideal for providing secure solarpower. These types of power plants use mirrors to concentrate sunlight to create heat which is used to produce steam to drive steam turbines and electricity generators. Heat storage tanks (e.g. molten salt tanks or concrete blocks) can be used to store heat during the day to power steam turbines during the night or when there is a peak in demand. In order to ensure uninterrupted service during overcast periods or bad weather (without the need for expensive backup plants), the turbines can also be powered by oil, natural gas or biofuels. As an interesting side effect (and of great benefit to local people), waste heat from the power-generation process may be used to desalinate seawater or togenerate cooling.

The main reason for favouring CSP over photovoltaics is its ability to supply power on demand for 24 hours a day. PV is more expensive than CSP and needs expensivesystems for storing electricity, such as pumped storage. If pumped storage facilities in Europe were to be fed with relatively large amounts of electricity from fluctuating sources from MENA, there would be a need for more power lines and those lines would be under-utilized since they would operate at full capacity for only a few hours each day.

A consortium of 20 blue chip German firms has thrown its weight behind the gigantic Desertec Sahara solar plan.

A new study helps explain why: The mega project could help spawn 240,000 new green jobs in Germany and deliver up to $2 trillion in profits to companies by 2050, according to the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

Desertec was launched in 2007 by the German association of the Club of Rome. Its architects seek to spread a supergrid of concentrating solar thermal plants (CSP) across a 6,500 square-mile stretch of North African desert to eventually power most of Europe.

According to the Wuppertal report, exporting the CSP technologies to Africa and other desert solar hotspots would help German manufacturers build on their already strong solar market share.

CSP "offers great opportunities for German plant builders," the authors wrote. They reveal the nation's likely winners:

Computerworld - Microsoft late on Monday denied that it has finished Windows 7, quashing rumors that the company was about to declare "release to manufacturing," or RTM.

"We are close, but have not yet signed off on Windows 7," said company spokesman Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows blog Monday night. "As previously stated, we expect Windows 7 to RTM in the 2nd half of July."

LeBlanc echoed a comment made by Bill Veghte, Microsoft's senior vice president for Windows business, in a presentation at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) earlier today. Although Veghte did not reference last week's reports that claimed RTM was imminent, he did say that Windows 7 would wrap up in the last two weeks of this month.

An anonymous reader links to Ars Technica's report that (quoting) "Microsoft today announced that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have hit the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) milestone. The software giant still has a lot of work to do, but the bigger responsibility now falls to OEMs that must get PCs ready, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) that are testing their new apps, and Independent Hardware Vendors (IHVs) that are preparing their new hardware. The RTM build is 7600, but it is not the same one that leaked less than two weeks ago (7600.16384). We speculated that Microsoft may end up recompiling build 7600 until it is satisfied, but it only took the company one more shot to get it right: 7600.16385 is the final build number. Microsoft refused to share the full build string, but if you trust leaks from a few days ago, it's '6.1.7600.16385.090713-1255,' which indicates that the final build was compiled over a week ago: July 13, 2009, at 12:45pm. This would be in line with the rumored RTM date but it is also the day Microsoft stated that Windows 7 had not yet hit RTM. Although the final build had been compiled, Microsoft still had to put it through testing before christening it as RTM."

A Linux developer has published a new kernel patch that provides a workaround to avoid Microsoft's patents on the FAT filesystem. The patch, which has undergone extensive legal review by patent lawyers, could make it possible to use FAT on Linux without having to pay licensing fees to Microsoft.

Microsoft's recent lawsuit against TomTom, alleging infringement of filesystem patents, has left many questions unanswered about the legal implications of distributing open source implementations of Microsoft's FAT filesystem. A new Linux kernel patch that was published last week offers a workaround that might make it possible to continue including FAT in Linux without using methods that are covered by Microsoft's patents. The patent dispute erupted in February when Microsoft sued portable navigation device maker TomTom. Microsoft claimed that TomTom's Linux-based GPS products infringe on several of its patents, including two that cover specific characteristics of FAT, a filesystem devised by Microsoft that is widely used on removable storage devices such as USB thumb drives and memory cards. Motwani was best known for mentoring Sergey Brin and Larry Page in their student days at Stanford University in California, where he was professor of computer science. As their search engine took shape, Motwani became their technical adviser and guided several other computer-based companies including PayPal, in which he was an early investor. A shrewd businessman as well as an acclaimed computer scientist, he also owned an undisclosed amount of stock in Google. "Today, whenever you use a piece of technology," blogged Brin, "there is a good chance a little bit of Rajeev Motwani is behind it." "At some point these guys said, we want to go do a company. Everybody said you must be out of your minds. There are like 37 search engines out there and what are you guys going to do? And how are you going to raise money, how will you build a company, and these two guys said, we'll just do it and they went off and did it. And then they took over the world. And right now, you know, other search engines do not even compare. It is just amazing. Just feels like a part of a little bit of history and I contributed a little bit to that history." Asked to explain how Google's technology works, Motwani offered a typical illustration. "Let us say that you wanted information on 'bread yeast' and put those two words in Google. Then it not only sees which documents have these as words mentioned but also whether these documents are linked to other documents. An important page for 'bread yeast' must be having all other pages on the Web dealing in any way with 'bread yeast' also linking to it.

"In our example there may be a Bakers' Association of America, which is hyperlinked by most documents containing 'bread yeast', then it implies that most people involved with 'bread' and 'yeast' think that the Bakers Association's web site is an important source of information. So Google will rate that web site very high and put it on top of its list. Irrelevant documents which just mention 'bread' and 'yeast' will not be given any priority in the results.

GM hopes to finally lay to rest the diesel versus hybrid debate with its diesel-like new gas engine

There has been a reoccurring debate over the merits of diesel vehicles versus hybrid ones. Both technologies help to increase fuel economy; however, people tend to be convinced that the one or the other is the only solution to these problems.

Now GM finally is preparing to lay these criticisms to rest with potentially the first compression-ignited gas engines to see rigorous real world testing, in preparation of market entry.

In order to understand why this is so significant, a discussion of engines is in order. Diesel engines typically have two advantages over their gasoline burning counterparts. The first is direct injection. Traditional gas engines inject fuel into an intake, and the air-gas mix is then sucked into chamber, compressed, and finally ignited. Diesel engines put it directly into the combustion chamber, a more efficient process. This problem has already been tackled by Ford (EcoBoost), GM and many others, and direct-injection gas engines will soon be all over the market.

The second diesel advantage is compression ignition. In a diesel engine, the compression of the gas/air mix triggers ignition, and the compression causes the combustion to be evenly distributed. In a traditional gasoline engine, compression is limited by design so less-efficient spark ignition must be used. This problem has yet to be solved in a production model.

GM's HCCI (homogenous charge compression ignition) four-cylinder engine unveiled at the company's research and development center this week may be the first engine to bring compression to the world of gas engines. In early testing the engine deliver 15 percent better fuel economy and much lower NOx gas and CO2 emissions.

Uwe Grebe, GM's executive director of powertrain advanced engineering, says that the new engine greatly reduces these toxic gases. He says that the technology can easily "be applied to many engines, including four- , six- and eight-cylinder engines."

The secret to the new engine is temperature control. Typically an engine runs at 3,800 degrees Fahrenheit, but the new engine runs from 0 to 60 mph and from idle to 3,000 rpm at 2,900 degrees Fahrenheit (ignition temperature). This means that there are fewer pollutants, and compression can be used to ignite the fuel without risking damage to the engine. Essentially this yields a gas-burning engine that runs as clean and efficiently as a diesel.Vijay Ramappan, staff engineer for calibration, states, "From zero to 60, this engine can run completely in HCCI mode and basically work like a diesel." ...

"Temos a necessidade de reformar radicalmente o actual modelo de ensino nas universidades e escolas secundárias. Porquê? Porque actualmente o conhecimento está desintegrado em fragmentos disjuntos no interior das disciplinas, que não estão interligadas entre si e entre as quais não existe diálogo", sublinha, em entrevista à Lusa. O filósofo francês considera que o modelo actual leva a "negligenciar a formação integral e não prepara os alunos para mais tarde enfrentarem o imprevisto e a mudança". Socialism defines itself as “lay” and “republican”, but it is a religion in which democracy is divinity, “popular sovereignty” is the source of faith, its secretary-general is the Pope and the Party apparatus is the clergy. 2 – Overvaluation of the concept of person and consequent dilution of the human being as an individual. – For socialism, society is a group as united and cohesive as possible; it is a machine made to yield “results”, with its consequent dilution of the individual. The individual shows his worth through the results of his work, hence the importance given to work and workers; it is this importance given to society rather than to the individual that fosters the fight for equality and democracy, on behalf of “social unity” and “inclusion”. The individual blends in nature and in the Universe. For socialism, the collective and statistics are the most important aspects. As such, the individual is a simple and easily dismissible part, whose worth depends on the results of his work. Individual rights are considered illegitimate privileges that must be abolished. Orthodox socialism also banishes the right to private property. A result is everything that helps socialism to reach and keep power, such as votes in an election poll. 3 – “Popular sovereignty”, as supreme ideological basis. – Since socialism is intrinsically materialistic, it is based in “popular sovereignty”. Sovereignty is at the top, above which no power is recognized. Socialism is based on the concept of “radical” deified democracy, which “is but a means to achieve something else, it’s an end in itself.” Socialism’s ultimate aim is to reach and keep power. Since it doesn’t recognize anything above “popular sovereignty”, it uses any means to achieve and keep power, as long as it is legitimized by this popular sovereignty. Thus, moral values and the concept of truth are the only ones that matter in order to get to power and to keep it. For instance, right and true is everything that should be said and done to obtain the people’s vote in the polls. 4 – “Social unity”. – By reducing the importance of the individual, socialism tends to eliminate individual differences on behalf of unity. Ideally, socialism’s goal is “social unity”, both political and ideologically, which means that it must become a dictatorship. This unity is imposed by dictators, empowered by the so-called “popular sovereignty”. Socialist dictators are the supreme interpreters of “popular sovereignty”, deriving from the “deified” democracy, which represents “an end in itself”. These dictators impose the rules and determine what should be considered true or false. Every individual is free to agree with them. However, disagreeing with them is a very serious anti-democratic insult, because it is a heresy against the deified legitimacy of “popular sovereignty”, thus breaking the united and cohesive society. “Social unity” forces the exercise of “inclusion” and “social practices” to “correct inadequacies in obtained results”, to eliminate the differences among individuals, making them dependent in order to get votes at election polls. In practice, centralizing power on the socialist dictator is done through a well structured hierarchized and omnipresent Party apparatus that controls everything. This brave dog, "Cabrillo," is being hailed as a hero by the San Diego
Fire-Rescue Department.

The Portuguese water dog yesterday received a special honorary "Fire Dog" award
-- and even got a close-up tour of a fire engine.

The assistant fire chief says thanks to Cabrillo's strong sense of smell, he
was able to alert his owner of a fire in their neighborhood.

Cambridge University says scientist Stephen Hawking is hospitalized and 'very ill' Professor Stephen Hawking, one of the world's most famous scientists, is "very ill" in hospital, Cambridge University said today. Professor Hawking, who works at the university, was undergoing tests at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. A university spokesman said the 67-year-old physicist, who is best known for his book A Brief History of Time, was taken to Addenbrooke's by ambulance. "Professor Hawking is very ill," he added. Professor Hawking suffers from motor neurone disease and is wheelchair bound. He speaks with the help of a voice synthesiser. He developed symptoms of the disease while studying in the 1960s and is one of the world's longest surviving sufferers. "Professor Hawking is very ill," said Gregory Hayman, the university's head of communications. "He is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks." Later in the afternoon, Hayman said Hawking was "now comfortable but will be kept in hospital overnight." The illness had caused Hawking to cancel an appearance at Arizona State University on April 6. Hawking, 67, gained renown for his work on black holes, and has remained active despite being diagnosed at 21 with ALS, (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), an incurable degenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. For some years, Hawking has been almost entirely paralyzed, and he communicates through an electronic voice synthesizer activated by his fingers. Hawking was involved in the search for the great goal of physics — a "unified theory" — which would resolve contradictions between Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which describes the laws of gravity that govern the motion of large objects like planets, and the Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with the world of subatomic particles. "A complete, consistent unified theory is only the first step: our goal is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our own existence," he wrote in his best-selling book, "A Brief History of Time," published in 1988. In a more accessible sequel "The Universe in a Nutshell," published in 2001, Hawking ventured into concepts like supergravity, naked singularities and the possibility of a universe with 11 dimensions.
